What is Botox®?

Botox® is a serum made with the Botulinum toxin, which has a mild and temporary relaxing effect. It has been approved for both medical and cosmetic use, and is safe, although there are some possible side effects.

What Can Botox® Do for Me?

Cosmetic Botox® treatments are primarily designed to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles. These wrinkles develop due to the way the muscles move under the skin, causing them to fold over and over again, eventually developing creases.

The toxin is injected into specific facial muscles, often in the forehead. The injection works to temporarily relaxes these muscles. Because the muscles can no longer move, the skin over top of them stops folding. Eventually, the creases caused by repetitive movements start to fade, giving the appearance of younger, firmer skin.

Botox® treatments may last up to 12 weeks. Dysport treatments may last up to 16 weeks.

What to Expect From Your Botox® Treatments

Be sure to eat and stay hydrated before your appointment to reduce nervousness. Botox® is administered through a small needle, however, many patients report nothing more than momentary discomfort.

You may experience some redness or swelling at the injection sites, however, this will likely dissipate within 10 minutes or so. It’s not uncommon to have a slight headache after the injection. You can treat this with mild over-the-counter pain medication.
